The Almoravid Dynasty

The City dates back back to 1062 when Marrakech was founded by Youssef IbnTachfin to form the Almoravid dynasty, the region transformed into a commercial & religious hub that contributed to the building of many koranic schools. This resulted in Marrakech being named as the capital for the kingdom.

Almohad Dynasty

The 'Almohad Caliphate' was a Moroccan Berber Muslim Empire which was founded by Ibn Tumart. In 1147 they succeeded in overthrowing the Almoravid Dynasty, which led them to extend their influence over both the Maghreb & Al Andalus Region by 1159.

The
Merinid Dynasty

At the later period of the 13th century, the Marinid overthrew the Almohad Caliphate, who at the time controlled Morocco. Marinid has brief control over the Maghreb during the middle of the 14th Century but was later abandoned in favour of Fez, which soon after became the capital.

Saadian Dyntasty

In the early 16th century Marrakech once again retained its title of 'capital of the kingdom'. This was an important time for Marrakech due to Saadian Sultan Ahmed El-Mansour who built the EL-Badii Palace & the Saadian Tombs, which still stand today.

Current day Marrakech is a testament to all of the heritage that has survived & thrived throughout its history. Visiting the city provides an experience like no other & is a hot-spot for tourists from around the globe.

Its nickname, the red city, originates from the red sandstone brickwork that was introduced in the 12th century, which can be seen in most building's & structures throughout the territory. Marrakech is a fountain of activity throughout the year holding regular traditional events, experiences & activities.
